Olivia Newton-John's Legally Dead Former Boyfriend May Have Been Found Alive And Well

It takes a bit to raise eyebrows on the celebrity news front. This one may do the trick. Olivia Newton-John’s former boyfriend, Patrick McDermott, may be alive and well in Mexico. So what’s the big deal about that? Not much, except for the fact that he was declared legally dead back in 2008. As the Daily Mail shares, he’s now suspected of faking his own death.

In 2005, McDermott was on board the fishing boat Freedom in San Pedro, California. He was never seen again. While none of the boat’s 22 other passengers saw him go overboard, that was the overwhelming assumption. Search and rescue missions proved fruitless, and he was ultimately declared dead in 2008. However, the television program Dateline hired private investigator Philip Klein to get to the bottom of things, and he would go on to claim that he had no doubt that McDermott was still alive.

However, there was no photographic evidence to back up his claims - until now that is. US media agency Coleman-Rayner recovered a photograph from a Mexican campsite last month, and that photo is believed to show McDermott lounging next to an unidentified woman. Private investigator Charlie Parker is on board with the theory, and he says the picture is pretty unmistakable.

“The widow's peak is exact. The eyes are very similar and the ears extend down on the head the same distance. I believe it is him,” he said, noting that he believes it’s a “90 percent match.”

So why would he fake his own death? One theory suggests he was looking to escape some debt, including thousands of dollars that he owed in child support. A source close to Newton-John offered up some thoughts on the news, but quickly pointed out that the star has more important issues to tend to at the moment in the form of her ongoing cancer battle.

“Olivia will be shocked that it has finally come to an end, and that she can finally say 'Yes, he's alive,'” the source said. “But, in saying that, she has her own battles to fight at the moment - she'll want to just forgive him and move on.”

Last year, the star offered up some thoughts on her former boyfriend’s disappearance and the subsequent mystery during an appearance on Australia’s version of 60 Minutes.

“It was very hard, he was lost at sea and nobody really knows what happened,” she said. “It's human to wonder. Those are the things in life you have to accept and let go because whenever you go through difficult times there are always those concerns but...I live on.”

We’ll have to wait and see how this bizarre story ultimately plays out, but the jig may, in fact, be up if McDermott is still alive. Assuming that he is, he may want to keep a low profile for the foreseeable future, as the fact that anyone and everyone walks around with a camera in their pocket these days points to the chance that more photos will be out there in a heartbeat.
