Older Woman Attempts To Shame Teen Girl For Wearing This On A Hot Day

Despite enormous advances in women’s rights, a disturbing number of people still think that they have the right to deride and attack a woman for her clothing choices. Now, a teenage girl has been caught in the crossfire after being verbally abused by a stranger while purchasing a drink at her local gas station.

It was a 106-degree day and Madison Herber, a 19-year-old college student, was dressed entirely appropriate, especially considering the temperature. Because of the heat, Madison was wearing a long flowing pink shirt and a pair of shorts. In a photo posted on Facebook, Madison admitted that the shirt was long and almost covered her pants but emphasized that she was “in fact wearing shorts.” While Madison minded her own business in the gas station, an “older lady” approached her from behind and began attacking her clothing, calling her “very trashy” and exclaiming that Madison was typical of “what’s wrong with [her] generation.”

After the demeaning abuse, Madison decided to write about the incident on Facebook, telling people how the unnamed woman said: “my generation was the worst generation, that she didn’t think we had any values or morals." Madison started her post fiercely, writing: “to the older lady that had the audacity to comment on my clothing.”

In her post, Madison went on to criticize the woman’s attack on her and the millennial generation, declaring that: “1.) im aware that you would consider me a millennial, and that past generations have nothing nice to say about this millennial generation. but, i had no say in which generation i would be born in and for you to make me feel so degraded just because of what i wear, well obviously that's what's wrong with your generation.”

The outspoken young student went on to make two more points, rebuking the vindictive lady, saying: “2.) do NOT ask me if i'm wearing shorts. i may be a millennial but i'm not an idiot. no, i do not leave the house without putting pants on. 3.) i do not apologize for my generation but i'm sorry that i didn't grow up in a time where we wore skirts down to our ankles. times have changed, understand that.”

Madison’s post quickly went viral and her online response was featured in several prominent publications. In an interview with Teen Vogue, Madison talked about the incident, saying: "It makes our society look heartless and negative." The confident young woman had some words of advice for people in similar situations, emphasizing that "Even though people have negative mindsets, that doesn't mean we have to," she told Teen Vogue. "Always stay positive. If you're confident in yourself, nobody can knock you down."

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident and women continue to be attacked for their clothing choices in many different scenarios. Just recently, a Tennessee woman made national headlines after being asked to leave her apartment’s swimming complex because her one-piece might “excite” a group of teenage boys.
