Officials Warn Parents To Think Twice Before Posting Photos Of Kids First Day Of School

First day of school photos are something you're going to want to treasure, but detectives are warning people to be careful about sharing them. It could be dangerous to post kids' photos online.

Sharing memories on social media platforms like Facebook is very common these days, but parents may not realize that predators may be watching. Detective Kenny Lynch, North Carolina Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, is concerned about what a photo might tell a pedophile or identity thief.

"I don’t recommend posting anything that’s going to identify their school, their name or their address..." said Lynch. "Obviously, you want to share those pictures with your family and friends, but you don’t know who their friends are."

Photos that make it easy for a viewer to reveal your child's name, photos that show your address or your child's school can invite trouble.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends that parents order a credit report for children when they reach the age of about 16 to see if there are any identity theft problems. That will give parents a couple of years to straighten the problem out before children are ready to get jobs and move out of the home.
