Officials Send Out Warning About Crocs

Crocs are a popular brand of footwear that many people find convenient for summer use. They're easy to slip on and off, lightweight and comfortable. Since they're made of foam rubber, you don't have to worry about sun showers, you can use your Crocs at the beach or on the boat and they won't be ruined. If they fall off in the water, don't worry-- they float. Moms love them for kids, and for those who want to express themselves, Crocs come in a variety of colors and patterns.

Crocs sound like a great summer footwear option-- but they might be too good to be true.

One podiatrist who spoke to the Huffington Post warns that Crocs may ruin your feet. "Unfortunately Crocs are not suitable for all-day use," said Dr. Megan Leah, adding that "...these shoes do not adequately secure the heel."

"When the heel is unstable, toes tend to grip which can lead to tendinitis, worsening of toe deformities, nail problems, corns and calluses. The same thing can happen with flip flops or any backless shoes as the heel is not secured," the doctor explained.

Many foot doctors say patients with foot or heel pain are often Croc wearers.

The 'Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology' found that croc wearers were more likely to suffer from toenail fungus and fungal infections on their feet. This is particularly true of those who wear cheap knock-off brands that are made of rubber rather than foam rubber. The non-breathable material locks in any moisture, which encourages the growth of bacteria and fungi.

Doctors don’t say you shouldn’t wear Crocs at all. It’s fine to slip them on for a couple of hours at the beach, dog park, or for mucking about the back yard. Just limit your use.

Dr. Alex Kor, the president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, told the Huffington Post, "...under no circumstances can I suggest wearing Crocs 8 to 10 hours per day."
