Officer Left with Burns In Mouth And Throat After Taco Bell Workers Lace Quesadilla

An Oklahoma City police officer went to a Taco Bell drive through one day in uniform to grab some dinner for himself and his wife. He claims that the people at the drive-through window acted rather odd, but he didn't think much of it.

After he bit into a quesadilla, his mouth and throat began to burn. An investigation found the fast food workers put things into the officer’s food that caused the injuries, and he's now suing Taco Bell.

Officer Shawn Byrne and his wife, Amanda Byrne, are suing Taco Bell for more than $75,000 after an incident in which employees deliberately tampered with the officer's food. Mr. Byrne claims that he ordered a steak quesadilla and Mountain Dew at the drive-through in February on his way home.

"After the person at the window took his order, he went over to two men employees and said something to them. They all looked over at him and started laughing," reads the officer's lawsuit. "A few minutes later, the order taker brought his order and said he was sorry for the delay."

When Byrnes bit into his wrap, everything began to burn. At first, he attributed the burn to the spices, but by the third bite, he realized there was something wrong. By morning, his mouth and throat were still burning.

Mr. Byrnes went to a doctor, who found burn spots on the officer's throat and in his mouth. The officer, who had kept the rest of the wrap, had it tested. The tests proved that it had been spiked with a 'high concentration of pepper' and cologne.

The police investigated and discovered that two of the three Taco Bell employees who were working at the drive-thru window that day are felons. Closed caption video showed the employees taking the order, dropping the food on the floor, picking it up, and then handing it to him out the window.

One of the employees was questioned and admitted that instead of quesadilla sauce, straight chipotle was put on the wrap.

Two weeks after the incident, Byrnes developed appendicitis. Doctors believe the irritation to the organ was caused or exacerbated by the spiked wrap, and Byrnes had to have surgery. The officer ended up missing more than 127 hours of work while he was recovering from the injuries, as well as 68 hours of extra jobs he had scheduled.

Taco Bell dismisses the confession by the employee and the tests performed on the quesadilla wrap. They say they have reviewed the case and found no evidence of food tampering or intentional wrongdoing. The company put out the following statement:

"Taco Bell is deeply appreciative of law enforcement, and we in no way endorse or accept discrimination against police officers or anyone else for that matter. We immediately and fully cooperated with the police, who reviewed the surveillance video we provided and interviewed all of our employees present at the time. We understand that no evidence of malicious intent or criminal activity was found. As of today, no one has been arrested or charged with any crime, making the lawsuit’s claims of deliberate wrongdoing puzzling, to say the least."
