Obama's $5.3M Mansion Is Built, But Neighbors Are Questioning This New Addition

The neighborhood was just fine until that pesky former First Family moved in. That’s likely about the sentiment being shared by neighbors in the exclusive Kalorama neighborhood of Washington DC, also known as the new stomping grounds of former President Obama and family. As AWM shares, moving into a new neighborhood can be a little disruptive when you are formerly the most powerful man in the world, and that can lead to some alterations being made to your surroundings to accommodate your security requirements.

Former presidents can not simply immerse themselves back into everyday life like the average person. Beyond the obvious adjustment they need from being on demand around the clock, there’s also the matter of their own personal security. Unfortunately, the world we live in is not a safe place, and that leads to a heightened sense of awareness about the safety of former sitting presidents. As such, they are entitled to Secret Service detail to keep them safe and out of harm’s way - and that comes with its own adjustments as well.

The new residence and surrounding neighborhood need to be scoped out and vetted properly, and adjustments will be made as needed. In the case of the Obama’s new home in Kalorama - a sprawling mansion that reportedly carries a price tag of $5.3 million - one of the alterations included the construction of a new security fence. The home is just a rental for the Obama’s, but there’s no word on who was on the hook for the cost of the project.

There have been varying reports making the rounds about what the neighbors are feeling about the new residents. There are claims that some neighbors feel inconvenienced by the fact that the new family is so high maintenance on the security front, while other neighbors take it as par for the course in the exclusive neighborhood. Either way, there’s no getting around extra security requirements for a former president. For those that may be on the fence about the new fence, the bright side is that the Obama’s are reportedly only staying until youngest daughter Sasha finishes up high school.
