Even The Left Is Growing Weary Of Obama’s New Jet-Setting Ways

Ever since leaving office, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have hit the road for what seems to be a never-ending vacation. Few people will begrudge Obama for taking some much-needed time office, as the presidency is not exactly a 9-to-5 job.

Before and after photos of any president will tell you all you need to know, so it’s great that the former First Couple is reconnecting away from the grind. That being said, it would be awfully nice if they stopped flaunting it so much.

As Fox News shares, that sentiment is gaining plenty of steam, and it’s not just sour grapes from Obama detractors. The Obamas' showy lifestyle is wearing thin on the Left as well, as there’s only so many photos of the pair palling around with millionaires at luxury resorts that one can take.

"These are some of the most luxurious travel destinations in the world. Many of our clients spend tens of thousands of dollars or more to stay at these resorts, which cater to the most discriminating and demanding guests,” according to Kendra Thornton, travel expert and owner of luxury travel agency Royal Travel. “For example, Necker Island has a nightly price tag of $80,000. Anyone who stays at these properties does so because they want the best of the best."

That’s all fine, well and good if you have the means to enjoy it, but it’s an incredibly bad look for someone that spends so much time decrying income inequality.

“These trips are like the lifestyles of the rich and famous,” notes Democratic strategist Pat Caddell. “I think the Bernie Sanders wing of the party, when they see President Obama, whom they instinctively want to defend being the corporatist president, I think it makes the base uneasy.”

Dr. David Michael Smith of the Houston Socialist Movement feels there’s a bit more at play here, as he feels the showy lifestyle points to the former commander-in-chief’s true colors.

“Obama is not as wealthy or as conservative as Trump, George W. Bush, or George H.W. Bush, but he enjoys what used to be called ‘the lifestyle of the rich and famous,’” he said. “I am not surprised by Obama’s several recent foreign vacations. As president, he disappointed millions of supporters who hoped he would be a strong advocate for working-class people.”

Even celebs are piling on Obama, as HBO host John Oliver demonstrated in an interview with Seth Meyers on Late Night.

“I’ll tell you who should kick back a little less,” he said. “This might be controversial - I’m a little sick of seeing photos of President Obama on vacation with Richard Branson. Just tone it down with the kite-surfing pictures. I’m glad he’s having a nice time - America is on fire.”

Tone it down is some wise advice here, but all the First Couple really has to do is stop being so showy about it. That’s an awful look for anyone, and it’s exacerbated by the Obamas' high profile. Go enjoy nice things, you’ve earned it - but don’t have the gall to spend one of your high-priced speeches railing against income inequality.
