NFL's Brandon Marshall Takes a Hit for Kneeling During Anthem

It seems that Colin Kaepernick has started a trend among NFL players, several of whom have joined him for protests while the National Anthem is played before their games. As opposed to sitting it out altogether, several of them have taken a knee to make their point. According to the Denver Post, that’s impacted at least one of the player’s wallets.

Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall has lost a number of endorsements in the wake of his decision to take a knee. Several companies that he’s contracted with have told him that his services are no longer needed, including CenturyLink.

“While we acknowledge Brandon’s right, we also believe that whatever issues we face, we also occasionally must stand together to show our allegiance to our common bond as a nation,” a statement from CenturyLink read in part.

Marshall sounds undeterred despite the financial hit, and he shared some of the reasoning for his protest decision.

“People don’t really realize it because people that aren’t minorities, they don’t know what it’s like to be a minority in this country. I’m not saying it’s terrible. I love this country. We have great opportunities, but at the same time, if you’re not a minority you don’t understand,” he said.
