NFL Star Receives Apology Letter From Former Teacher - Thought He'd Never Make It

Julian Edelman, star wide receiver for the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, is no stranger to dealing with doubters. He stands at 5’10”, which is considered to be relatively small by NFL standards. As such, he’s had to work his tail off to make opportunities happen for himself. Edelman has done just that, and he remains a key cog on one of the league’s top franchises.

As Purpose2Play shares, one of the many people that have doubted Edelman through the years is an English professor from his time at the College of San Mateo in California. Back in 2006, he was lighting the field up as a quarterback. He had his eyes on the prize, and that was to make it to the NFL. The professor wasn’t so sure about all that, and Edelman was told to look into “realistic goals.”

Edelman would go on to transfer to Kent State to finish out his collegiate career. He turned enough heads to get a shot at the NFL. The Patriots snagged him towards the end of the 2009 draft, but the hard work wasn’t done just yet. Edelman still had to prove himself.

Lower level draft picks aren’t guaranteed a roster spot by any means. Edelman entered the NFL with a purpose, and he used his internal focus and drive to help him achieve his dreams. Fast forward to today, and Edelman is regarded as one of the better receivers in the league.

There are plenty of doubters that have had to wipe egg off of their face as a result, and one of them just stepped up to the plate to deliver a memorable apology. Edelman’s old college professor took the time to write him a letter, and the star player has promptly shared it on social media.

“You had made some comment about 'going to the league,' and I said something about setting realistic goals, about how few people successfully enter the ranks of the professional athlete, blah, blah, blah,” the letter reads in part. “I don’t think it fazed you, frankly, but whenever I think back on it, I feel terrible, not because you proved me wrong, but because I stupidly voiced an uneducated opinion that implied I had distain (sic) for your passion for the game.”

Edelman would share his post with a simple caption that offers up an outstanding lesson for anyone that dreams big.

“set your goals high. do whatever it takes to achieve them. #motivation,” he wrote.

While that seems like a super simple formula, few have the will to do the ‘whatever it takes’ part. That’s what separates those that make it from those that do not. It can be incredibly tough to press forward in the face of what seems to be nonstop adversity, but the strength you gather along the way makes the adversity seem like not that big of a deal.

Edelman is a shining example of hard work paying immense dividends if you stick with it long enough, and that’s a lesson folks in all walks of life can benefit from.
