NFL Star Exits Stage Left When Pressed On Comments About Racial Divide Between Athletes

Questions about race, race relations and things of that nature are a veritable minefield. That’s true whether you’re an athlete, a celebrity, a politician, or anyone else with even an ounce of notoriety. That’s partially why reporters continue to hit those notes, as you never know when one of the probing questions will lead the interview subject down a rabbit hole they can’t get out of.

There are no perfect humans, and it can be incredibly easy to trip over your own tongue when the heat is on. That’s happened a countless number of times as a result of questions that have to do with race. Sometimes, the interview subject exposes themselves to be something of a bigot. Other times, interview subjects without a racist bone in their body find that they have hell to pay for an answer that was misconstrued.

Of course, there are also famous faces that open up the conversation about race all by themselves. That can run the gamut from generic commentary to inflammatory statements, but at some point in time, you can bet that they will be forced to answer some questions about what they had to say. As AOL shares, that’s the situation New York Giants wide receiver Brandon Marshall found himself in recently, but he wasn’t feeling it.

Back in 2015, Marshall offered up some comments about the fact that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was suspended for four games over the so-called ‘Deflategate’ scandal. There were a whole host of folks that felt that Brady got off too easy, but there’s another camp that felt the suspension wasn’t even close to being warranted. Marshall brought race into the equation while offering up his take.

"There are a lot of players out there that believe that white players - specifically, at the quarterback position - are treated differently," he said at the time.

Fast forward to this week, and Marshall was a guest on WEEI's "Kirk and Callahan." You guessed it - his comments came up.

“Asked about his comments in 2015 on Thursday, Marshall instead praised Brady and the New England Patriots' culture, then said, 'I'm not getting into the race card with you guys. So, if that's what you wanna do, you guys can go there. But black guys in America get treated differently, period,'" AOL shares. “One of the hosts then said, 'But you would admit Brady was treated seriously,' as Marshall repeated that black men in America are treated differently.”

Things got pretty testy from that point, and Marshall threatened to take his ball and go home.

"We done with this interview? Can I get off of this interview? Alright, I'm done with you guys ... Come on man, you going back to a year ago, brother,” he said. “You guys made news now. You got Brandon Marshall to say black guys get treated differently and I'm gonna drop the mic on you guys."

When the hosts continued to press the issue, Marshall got up and left. In fairness to Marshall, there’s no doubt that the hosts were trying to get a rise out of him and have a profile-enhancing moment. That’s the nature of the beast on talk radio, but that doesn’t mean it has to give us warm and fuzzy feelings.

That being said, if you’re going to lay your cards on the table about a particular topic, you should be well prepared to answer for them without storming off. Neither the hosts nor Marshall come out of this smelling like roses, but it does provide another case study for famous folks on how delicate the subject of race can be.
