Newspaper Publishes Offensive Image of the Pope

Many Catholic readers of the New York Times are shocked and angry that the newspaper published a picture of a portrait featuring 17,000 multicolored condoms laid out to resemble Pope Benedict XVI.

The piece, which is on exhibit at the Milwaukee Art Museum, is titled “Eggs Benedict.” The artist explained that she was criticizing the pope for claiming that condoms contribute to the spread of AIDS in Africa, Fox News reported.

Megyn Kelly and another Fox News commentator, Marc Thiessen, pointed out on “The Kelly File” that the Times refused to publish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad early this year, in fear of upsetting Muslims. Thiessen accused the newspaper of “hypocrisy.”

The Times’ editors said they rejected the cartoons because they were “deliberately intended to offend religious sensibilities." That led Thiessen to ask: “Does a picture of the pope made out of condoms deliberately offend religious sensibilities? Of course it does.”

Phil Corbett, associate managing editor for standards for the Times, told the Washington Examiner: "There's no simple, unwavering formula we can apply in situations like this. We really don't want to gratuitously offend anyone's deeply held beliefs. That said, it's probably impossible to avoid ever offending anyone. ... We have to make these judgments all the time. Reasonable people might disagree about any one of them.”
