Newborn Female Baby Abandoned In Thorn Bush In Gujarat, India

There are several countries across the world where female babies are still considered a major financial burden to their families. Unfortunately, related to this, some parents in these areas practice female infanticide, often just abandoning newborn baby girls in out of the way rural locations. In most cases, scavenging animals quickly find the abandoned baby so there is little to no evidence of the crime.

In a suspected case of infanticide in India, a newborn baby girl survived being thrown into a thorn bush in what is believed to be another incident of parents abandoning a female child because they wanted a boy and feel they can’t afford to raise a girl.

It seems the unwanted baby girl was found lying under a thorn bush, badly scratched but alive, in the city of Una in Gujurat state in western India.

Indian authorities say that this incident is likely the latest tragic example of a baby girl being abandoned by a poor family.

In this case, the lucky newborn girl was rescued when her loud crying was heard by a passerby who walked over to the thorn bush to check out the odd noise.

Apparently, the female infant was found on the ground at the foot of the thorn bush and was bleeding from several spots where the thorns had poked through her skin.

The alert person who happened to be passing by the bush immediately alerted emergency services, and an ambulance was dispatched to take the unwanted baby to a nearby hospital for a full medical examination.

According to local Indian media sources, the doctors at the hospital stated the little girl would have died within a few hours at most if had she not been found by the sharp-eared Good Samaritan passerby.

The local sources also report that the emergency medical team carefully removed a number of thorns from the baby’s body and cleaned her wounds as well as gave her some formula.

The doctors at the local hospital later reported that abandoned baby girl was doing well and recovering well from her injuries and dehydration. The statement from the hospital described her condition as stable.

Of note, local law enforcement authorities have begun an investigation to try and identify the baby's parents. Police note they believe the little girl was deliberately dropped into the bushes, likely by her own parents.

Keep in mind that female children are still a financial burden in many rural or poverty-stricken areas of India. For starters, parents often worry about having to pay an expensive dowry for the wedding of a daughter, and unlike girls, boys can also typically be counted on to help take care of their parents when they get older.

Although it seems hard to believe, keep in mind that according to the United Nations Children's Fund, close to 50 million girls/ women are missing from India's population today related to the practice of infanticide and sex-selective abortions.
