New Monopoly Game Piece Announced, Mike Rowe Illustrates What's Wrong With America's Work Ethic

TV host Mike Rowe is no stranger to hard work. In fact, he focuses on it while hosting shows such as ‘Dirty Jobs,’ and he’s become somewhat of a voice for blue collar workers across the nation. The ever-quotable Rowe has also become well-known for sharing his opinions, and he was recently asked his opinion on a mini-controversy that sprang up.

As the Independent Journal Review shares, Hasbro’s decision to replace a number of the iconic game pieces on its Monopoly game has not gone over too swell with everyone. While some have applauded the changes, many have chimed in to express their outrage. A user on social media asked Rowe for his thoughts.

“But I must confess, I was deeply dismayed to read about the sudden banishment of honest work from the Monopoly board. And I was doubly dismayed by their duly elected replacements - a rubber ducky, a penguin, and a dinosaur. That's right - we didn't just eliminate three iconic tokens of work - we supplanted them with a baby’s toy, an over-dressed bird, and a dead lizard,” he wrote.

The user ended up getting an earful, as Rowe views the decision as the symptom of a greater problem at hand.

“Anyway, the Iron/Cat debacle was four years ago, but clearly, a mere harbinger of things to come. Because this week, we have lost three more symbols that helped make America great, and their loss is no small thing,” Rowe continued, in reference to a previous decision by Hasbro.

That’s an interesting perspective from Rowe, and one that will likely inspire even more debate. Every generation decries the death of work ethic as we know it, but the country keeps on humming along. While there’s no doubt that perspectives have changed and some thumb their noses up at hard work, there are also plenty of people out there that pick up the ball when it’s their time.
