New Law Just Made Cops' Lives Even More Difficult

Even though he was in possession of a gun illegally, Massachusetts courts still let him go free. The court ruled that officer didn’t have reasonable suspicion to stop him the first place.

A Massachusetts court recently overturned the conviction of a man who was charged with carrying a gun without a permit after running from a Boston cop. Further, the ruling said that black men shouldn’t be considered as suspicious to people when they run from officers because they are only trying to avoid "the recurring indignity of being racially profiled."

The court cited data from ACLU in their ruling that showed that black people were disproportionately stopped by Boston police.

"Where a suspect is under no obligation to respond to a police officer's inquiry, we are of the view that flight to avoid that contact should be given little, if any, weight as a factor probative of reasonable suspicion. Otherwise, our long-standing jurisprudence establishing the boundary between consensual and obligatory police encounters will be seriously undermined."

Blue Lives Matter says that the defense attorneys “cherry-picked data” their data and ignored how “black people disproportionately commit crime and are more likely to be in high-crimes areas and they are subsequently stopped for those crimes.”
