New Jersey Homeowner In Trouble For Flying Donald Trump Flags

Joseph Hornick is a New Jersey homeowner whose Donald Trump flags may cost him a $2,000 fine or a 90-day stint in jail. Hornick has placed two “Trump Make America Great Again” campaign flags in front of his West Long Branch home and says he has a First Amendment right to express his support for the GOP presidential front-runner.

Hornick argued, “I’m not taking the flag down, and if I do 90 days in jail, I’ll do 90 days in jail." Unfortunately for Hornick, the town prohibits the public display of political lawn signs more than 30 days before an election. Although, New Jersey doesn't hold its primary until June 7.

On March 25, Hornick was ticketed after a resident, and former Democratic councilman, called police and inquired why his complaints about the flags to the municipal code enforcement officer had not resulted in a citation. Hornick countered that he is not displaying a lawn sign, but a flag instead.

Hornick explained, "I'm not a football fan. I'm not a sports fan. One thing I have become is a Donald Trump fan." Yet, West Long Branch considers the Hornick's flags the same as political lawn signs. When officers showed up on March 25, Hornick thought they were going to take a report on an incident of vandalism on the flags. Hornick is set to appear before a judge on April 20.
