New Drug Wreaking Havoc Across The Country

The capital of California has become the latest U.S. city to feel the scourge of the synthetic opiate fentanyl that has been leading overdoses in cities across the US for the last several years.

Based on federal statistics, there have been at least 42 overdoses and 10 deaths related to fake “Norco” tablets that actually include fentanyl in Sacramento since March 23. Fetanyl is a synthetic opioid 50 times more powerful than heroin. Norco is used to treat moderate to severe pain, and is made of hydrocodone and acetaminophen.

"The lab was able to identify the pills as containing fentanyl instead. This indicates that they are really fentanyl pills (street drugs – counterfeit) that have been made to look like Norco," according to a message on the website of the Sacramento County Department of Health and Human Services.

A number of other cities in the US cities have suffered large spikes of overdose deaths when batches of heroin or other drugs mixed with fentanyl show up on the streets. Moreover, in most cases, the addict doesn't know he is buying fentanyl.

According to those who work with opioid addicts, fentanyl has now become common all across the US. "It's hard to find heroin that doesn't have at least some fentanyl in it," according to one unnamed New York heroin addict.
