Neighbors Shocked To Find Out Old Lady Had Corpses Stashed In Her Home

A woman in Pennsylvania seemed like a perfectly pleasant elderly widow. Neighbors said the 91-year-old gave the stereotypical 'sweet little old grandmother' vibe. They were shocked, then, to discover the woman had been hiding corpses in her home for the last 18 years.

Jean Stevens isn't a serial killer or black widow. The Wyalusing resident is just a lonely old woman who has a hard time saying good-bye to those that she loves. In 1999, her husband of 60 years, James Stevens, passed away, and that's when the elderly lady did the most bizarre thing. A few days after the funeral, she paid someone to dig him up and bring his corpse home.

Stevens propped her husband's remains up on a sofa in the garage. She would regularly hang out with him, talk to him and spend quality time.

In 2010, it happened again. Stevens' twin sister, June Stevens, passed away, and the woman had her body dug up as well. The sister was given a spare room in the home.

It is unclear why all three share the same last name.

In 2010, neighbors made the grisly discovery of June's body in the spare room and tipped off police. Police investigated and took the bodies away from her, much to the woman’s dismay.

Stevens told police she has a hard time handling death. She hates the fact that the bodies are buried and out of sight. "When you put them in [the ground], that's goodbye, goodbye. In this way, I could touch her and look at her and talk to her," she said.

The woman said the same thing about her husband. "I could see him, I could look at him, I could touch him," she repeated.

She went on explaining how she would pass the time with her deceased sister. "I'd go in, and I'd talk, and I'd forget. I put her glasses on her. When I put the glasses on, it made all the difference in the world. I would fix her up. I'd fix her face all the time.”

The bodies were confiscated, but the widow didn’t face any charges, and authorities made a deal with her. They helped figure out a way so that she could keep her loved ones close.

Mrs. Stevens hired some workmen to build a gabled structure with gray siding and a white door. The new structure is very similar to her detached garage. It looks like a shed, but this elderly woman wasn't planning to store her Christmas decorations or old collectibles in the shed. It's actually a mausoleum created to be the final resting place of her dearly departed husband and sister.

Mrs. Stevens had the bodies put in bags, with their heads sticking out so she could see their faces. They are behind clear plastic panels.

Now, Mrs. Stevens can visit her loved ones every day. She’s also got a new, live friend to talk to: the coroner. While he was holding the bodies for her, the two spent a lot of time talking. "She's a wonderful lady," he said.
