Neighbors Outraged Over What They See Going On At Trendy New Hotel

A new hotel opened in New York City, bringing one hotelier's vision to life. Ian Schrager designed the hotel so that it would give budget travelers a luxury setting. He manages to keep the room costs down by making all check-ins over the internet, doing away with room service, and keeping the rooms posh and trendy, but minimalist in their decor. It's drawing crowds, but neighbors say they are getting more than they bargained for.

The floor-to-ceiling glass walls at the Public Hotel on Chrystie Street might offer great views to the guests, but it's offering some very unwanted views to the residents of the neighboring buildings. According to the locals in the apartment buildings on either side of the hotel, guests are constantly having loud sex in front of, or against, the picture windows with the curtains open. Some of the neighbors say guests get so loud at night it keeps them up - and that's saying something from people who live in the city that never sleeps.

The public housing complexes on either side of the Public Hotel are mostly elderly, and they're frustrated by the nightly shows of debauchery. They've caught individuals masturbating in front of the window, couples (heterosexual and homosexual) having sex up against the window, and groups of people having passionate orgies.

"Guys are together, girls and girls are together. They don’t even pull the shades down," said Leonor Fernandez, a 68-year-old grandmother who says she can't even open her blinds anymore when her grandkids come to visit.

Tenants of the buildings next door are frustrated with the 'indecency' to which they're being exposed. They have complained to the hotel and to the city, but no one is doing anything about it.

The problem, local residents say, is that the buildings are so close together that getting a glimpse of escapades going on at the hotel is inevitable. Barely the width of an alley separates the resident's windows from the hotel room windows. Neighbors say they can't always keep their blinds drawn because they have window air conditioning units or fans running.

"You see them having sex all the time, hands on the window," said resident Melissa Santos, a 26-year-old dental assistant. "Not like I’m a peeping Tom, but from the corner of my eye, you can see this going on four times a week."

And even those who keep the blinds drawn say it doesn't help. The noise of the hotel guests reminds you of just what's going on a few feet away. One resident's daughter is concerned about her mother. "She doesn’t even sleep. My mom is very, very upset — she has heart problems," she says.

Apparently, excitement was what the hotelier was going for. “A hotel is supposed to be more than just a place to sleep — it’s supposed to make your heart beat faster,” said Schrager.

Mission accomplished. The clear glass windows of the reasonably priced hotel sure makes the hearts beat faster for people who harbor exhibitionist fantasies. Locals say tinted windows could have resolved the problem for them, but that's not what the guests appear to want.

Hundreds of complaints have been lodged with the city against the hotel, but business is going on as usual.
