Nascar Owner Thanks God, Second Amendment After Thwarting Attack By Armed Intruders

Richard Childress, a 72-year-old Nascar team owner and a Hall of Fame inductee for the sport, was at his home in North Carolina with his wife when they had the absolute daylights scared out of them. The couple was upstairs when they heard the frightening sound of glass shattering downstairs. Childress went downstairs to check it out, but not before grabbing his handgun.

It’s a good thing he had armed himself before heading downstairs, as his home was being invaded by masked intruders with military-style guns. Childress fired off multiple shots, and that was enough to scare the masked men away. Police are still putting the pieces together of what happened, and they are relying on surveillance video to help connect the dots.

As the Charlotte Observer shares, Childress shared a simple message with Sheriff David Grice after the dust settled. Grice said that Childress told him “the only reason he and his wife were here today was because of God and the Second Amendment.”

Childress is a staunch gun rights advocate and a second vice president of the National Rifle Association. He’s in the clear for firing off his weapon in this case, as North Carolina state law allows homeowners to use deadly force during situations that involve unlawful and forced entry.

That certainly appears to be exactly what happened here. A trio of armed men broke a window on a door downstairs, and they forced their way in from that point. The home’s security system went off from that point, but Childress and his wife were in immediate danger.

The suspects were brandishing heavy weaponry, and they appeared to be wearing glasses and all black clothing. They were also all wearing hoodies and face coverings to conceal their identities.

It doesn’t appear that the sheriff’s department has any leads at this point, but a $50,000 reward is being offered up for information that may lead to arrests. The cops have posted still photos of the surveillance footage on social media in a bid to drum up some leads. The frightening situation has sparked quite a conversation, and some commenters felt the need to make it into a gun control debate.

“Too bad he missed,” shared one commenter.

“Makes me sad that I supported this GOP shoot firster for all those years,” added another commenter.

“Are you really that ignorant, three armed men try to enter his home and you are sad he shot first?” replied another commenter.

Childress was lawfully armed and in imminent danger. As such, he protected himself. It really doesn’t get any more cut and dry than that, and it’s curious that gun control advocates would attempt to use this to bolster their argument.

There were heavily-armed bad guys entering his home and prepared to do god knows what. Exactly what was he supposed to do, offer them a hot beverage and see if they wanted anything to eat?

That would be pretty absurd on the part of Childress, but it’s less absurd than the implication that he was somehow in the wrong for firing in the direction of intruders with military-style weapons that had just forcibly entered his home. If he hadn’t done that, neither he or his wife may be here right now.
