Muslim Teacher Says She Was Fired Based on Her Religion

Sireen Hashem was fired from Hunterdon Central Regional High School, and she has now filed a lawsuit.

She claims she was fired because she is Muslim and showed a video of Malala Yousafzai in her class. In addition, she says she was told she could not teach in the "same manner" as her peers who were not of Middle Eastern descent.

Hashem is Muslim American of Palestinian descent. Another teacher, Lindsay Warren, had shown her students a video about the Nobel Peace Prize winner. Hashem then showed the same video in her class that day.

A week later her supervisor, Robert Zywicki, said that a parent complained and stated that she could not "teach current events in the same manner as her non-Arab, non-Palestinian and non-Muslim colleagues." According to the lawsuit, Hashem tried to argue that Warren showed the same video. She says she was told "You are not Lindsay."

The following school year, the parent who complained, wrote on Facebook that Hashem's brother "was a terrorist" and that Hashem was "anti-Israel, was attempting to instill anti-semitic views in students."

Hashem said the school's principal, Suzanne Cooley, accused her of discriminating against Jewish students.
