Muslim Teacher Molests Child and Says It Was 'An Accident'

Mohammad Rana, 46, had been teaching at the Islamic Center of Jackson Heights for seven years before a 9-year-old student revealed that he was abusing her. Over the past three months, Rana repeatedly groped her. When police questioned him, all he had to say was "It was an accident."

The child victim states the abuse took place sometime between September 2015 and January 20, 2016. She said Rana would put his hand inside her shirt, fondle her chest and say "You are a good girl."

Her criminal complaint states he fondled her chest, over her clothes, on February 3 as well. Rana tried to lie by saying, “Usually before the class in mosque is over I tell all the kids to form a line." He’ll sometimes put his hand on the door, and on her, to stop her from leaving and “unintentionally and without thinking about where I make contact.”

He said he “never had any ill intentions whenever my hands came in contact with her” and asked for forgiveness. The little girl first told her mom, who didn't want to involve the police.

She gained the courage to say something with the school used puppets to explain sexual abuse. In the Koran, the Prophet Muhammad married a six-year-old girl. Rana faces up to seven years in prison for first-degree sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
