Murder-Suicide That Left Four People Dead Revolved Around Incestuous Relationship

The bodies of two men, one young woman and a baby were found across three different crime scenes in three different states, but all the deaths seem to be related to the same issue: an incestuous relationship between a father and daughter.

The young woman was adopted and sought out her biological parents, only to begin a romantic relationship with her father. The relationship resulted in a child and the couple were charged with incest, but before the case could go to court, things ended tragically.

It started when a couple gave up a baby girl for adoption in 1998. Steven and Alyssa Pladl were married and went on to have additional children.

Eighteen years later, that child, named Katie, went searching for her birth parents. She met the Pladls and became closer to them, even moving in with them and calling them 'mom' and 'dad'.

Alyssa and Steven began having marital problems and separated. Soon after, Alyssa discovered that her 42-year-old husband was having a sexual relationship with their 18-year-old daughter. She learned from reading her other child's journal, discovering that Katie was pregnant with her father's baby.

Alyssa reported the relationship, believing that Steven was manipulating Katie. The law descended upon the father and daughter quickly, and Alyssa took out a protective order to ban him from seeing their two younger daughters.

“There are no words to describe the sense of betrayal and disgust I'm feeling,” Alyssa told The Daily Mail after the incident was reported. “I waited 18 long years to have a relationship with my daughter — and now he's completely destroyed it.”

Steven and Katie were arrested in North Carolina and extradited back to Virginia where the relationship allegedly originated. Katie gave birth to a baby boy and Stephen was the father. They had a court date scheduled for April 23.

On Thursday morning, a disturbing 911 call came in from Steven Pladl's mother. Steven had told her that he killed Katie, now 20, and her adoptive father, Anthony Fusco. He also killed the baby, 7-month-old Bennett, and took his own life.

Katie and Fusco were found shot to death near her adoptive family's home in Connecticut. The baby's body was found in a home in Virginia. Steven Pladl was found dead in his car in New York of an apparent suicide.

According to reports, Katie broke up with her father the day before and was staying with her adoptive parents. She had planned to take Bennett to their home and raise him.

"We are heartbroken, and saddened over the death of this child and like you, we are trying to make sense of all the factors that led up to this senseless taking of life," said Knightdale Police Chief Lawrence Capps tp CBS 17 News.

Authorities in three states are still investigating the matter and have not released any details. They believe Mr. Pladl had intended to confront his daughter/lover, but things went terribly wrong, and it is unclear how the baby died. Homicide investigators in the three states are working together.

Alyssa Pladl advises that young people seeking to reunite with their biological family members go to counseling while doing so to help them cope with confused feelings.
