Mother Shocked By The Color Of Her Breast Milk - Realizes What It Is

A nursing mom was pumping her breast milk as usual, but when she compared to bags she made an amazing observation. She took to social media to write about why the breast milk she pumped in the evening was so different from the milk she pumped in the morning.

Mallory routinely pumps her breast milk before bedtime and stores it away in the freezer. After putting her bag of milk away, she spent the rest of the night nursing her newborn every two hours.

Early the next morning, she noticed that her daughter sounded congested and was sneezing. The baby had caught a cold that came out during the night. Mallory pumped her breast milk the next morning and stored it in the freezer as usual.

When the new mother took out the two bags of breastmilk and examined them side-by-side, the difference was stark. The bag from the morning pump was clearly much darker than the bag she pumped the night before.

"I read an article from a medical journal not too long ago about how Mom’s milk changes to tailor baby’s needs in more ways than just caloric intake.. So this doctor discusses that when a baby nurses, it creates a vacuum in which the infant’s saliva sneaks into the mother’s nipple," Mallory explains on a Facebook post.

Mallory explains that this 'baby spit backwash' is analyzed by mammary gland receptors, and the mother's body modifies the immunological composition of the milk. The mother's body literally customizes the milk with antibodies based on whatever pathogens might be present in the baby's spit.

"I didn’t notice a difference until today, but look at how much more the milk I produced Friday resembles colostrum (The super milk full of antibodies and leukocytes you make during the first few days after birth) and this comes after nursing the baby with a cold all night long," Mallory writes. "Pretty awesome huh?! The human body never ceases to amaze me.”
