Mother Questions Schools ‘Healthy Eating’ Program - Demands Answers

Dozens of parents who are unhappy with the school system's new focus on healthy eating. Nutritious food is not the problem, but the fact that schools are failing to get across an important message about moderation.

Prudence Hill writes for the 'Independent Journal Review' about her experience with her kids. It was a busy day of school, after-school sports and activities. When the busy mom decided to grab dinner from a drive-thru window, she had to convince her kids that it was okay to eat fast food occasionally.

Hill echoes the concern of many other parents. While schools are trying to educate students on making good food choices, they are also making a lot of kids paranoid. The lessons are backfiring; instead of teaching kids to be sensible, it's teaching them to become nervous dieters.

Some parents argue that healthy eating rules being enforced by schools are inconsistent. Teachers aren't trained nutritionists, but they feel qualified to confiscate a home-made muffin without even knowing what's in it, and substitute Cheerios for a child's snack.

Some teachers won't even replace a confiscated snack that has been deemed 'unhealthy'. Janae Brangman said to 'The Toronto Star' that her young daughter's teacher wouldn't let her have a snack because granola bars were considered banned. “I felt it was more unhealthy for a child not to eat at all, than to eat a granola bar with chocolate.”

Somewhere between McDonald’s and raw veggie platters lies a happy medium, and that’s all parents are hoping to find. When institutions arbitrarily issue mandates without room for common sense, children won’t get the balance that is so necessarily when it comes to learning healthy habits.
