Mother Outraged By Teacher's Insensitive Comment

In Oklahoma, Alisha Sands' 4-year-old son Zayde is currently learning to read and write. Yet, Sands was shocked when she Zayde was sent home with a letter from the teacher regarding how left-handedness is often associated with the devil. Sands said, "From picking things up to throwing things, to batting, to writing to just coloring, you'd do it at home with him, he's always, always used his left hand." According to Scientific American, around 15 percent of the world's population is left-handed. Last week, Sands noticed that Zayde was doing his homework with his right hand. So, she asked him if his teachers ever said anything about him writing with his hands.

Sands stated "And he raises [his left] one and says this one's bad." Sands decided to write the teacher a note and received a jaw-dropping response. The teacher sent Sands an article, which called left-handedness "unlucky," "sinister," and even "evil." Sands wrote, "It breaks my heart for him because someone actually believes that, believes my child is evil because he's left handed, it's crazy." This is Zayde's first year of school, but Sands says she will likely transfer Zayde to another class. In addition, Sands is planning to file a formal complaint with the Oklahoma Board of Education.
