Mother Furious By Permission Slip Sent Home From School, Her Response Is Going Viral (Photos)

For years, the Pledge of Allegiance has been a source of controversy in schools. Some parents have fought schools tooth and nail to ensure students are standing, hands on hearts, every morning. Others argue that the Pledge (particularly the line 'under God') is a violation of their children's rights.

One school thought that they would attack the problem head-on this year. They've sent out a permission slip for parents to sign if they wish their children to be exempt from saying the pledge. When the permission slip was posted to social media, things exploded.

“I understand my rights as a parent and request that my child, noted above, be excused from reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This request includes standing and placing his/her hand over his/her heart,” reads the slip.

A photo of the slip contains one parent's response to the school: "This is the dumbest thing I have ever read and I am so ashamed of this," the parent wrote.

The story has gone viral, and some bloggers point out that everyone already has the right to refrain from standing and reciting the Pledge. The permission slip is seen as a blatant attempt to stir the pot rather than to settle any problems. It’s been called an example of anti-patriotism at its finest.

Not everyone agrees. Some feel the Pledge has no place in the school. One AOL News commenter wrote, “The under God thingy obviously goes against the progressive Founder's separation of C&S. It's also a form of indoctrination and brain washing. By repeating the pledge some feel is a tacit nod to everything we have done good and bad. Also, what God are we under, the Santa looking guy or one of the retired ones on Mt Olympus.”
