Mother Faces Life in Prison for Horrific Murder Of Her Daughter

According to the Sacramento Bee, 34-year-old Ka Yang was convicted of first-degree murder and assault on a child.

The Sacramento, California mother of four was convicted of killing her infant daughter in 2011 by placing her in a microwave oven.

Yang was reportedly alone with her 2-month-old daughter Mirabelle Thao-Lo for just 11 minutes when she placed her in the microwave oven for five minutes. According to CBS Sacramento, the infant suffered burns to 60-80 percent of her body, including her internal organs.

Yang's attorney argued that the mother committed the murder while experiencing a seizure--something Yang's family defended. The jurors rejected the argument.

Family spokesperson Lao Paochoua Thao said, “She didn’t know what she was doing." Defense attorney Linda Parisi stated, “There is no history of child abuse. She has no criminal history."

Prosecutors argued that she did not have a seizure, and she lied to investigators multiple times about the cause of death before they found a pacifier in the microwave. Yang faces 26 years to life in prison. Sentencing will take place on Dec. 18. Her three sons have been placed in the custody of family members.
