Most Don’t Realize This Woman Served As A Marine Before She Became A Famous Actress

One very famous actress denied that she was ever in the military, but since her death the Smoking Gun has found proof positive. The actress, now deceased, was a WWII Marine. Can you guess who she is?

'Golden Girls' and 'Maude' star Bea Arthur, who passed away in 2009, always denied her military service in Hollywood. Perhaps the strong, tall woman with a deep voice had a hard enough time getting roles without throwing a military record into the mix.

It turns out, however, that it's not a rumor. The website 'Smoking Gun' recovered Bea Arthur's military records. In World War II, Arthur enlisted. She became a typist and a truck driver, and she was honorably discharged in 1945. Arthur even met her first husband, screenwriter Robert Alan Aurthur, in the military.

For those who watched Arthur argue with bigoted Archie Bunker on ‘All in the Family’ reruns, it was easy to see she the actress knew how to be a tough gal. It’s easy to picture her having the grit it would take to succeed in the Marine Corps, even in a position traditionally held by men.

Whatever her reason for not being proud of her service, Arthur took it to the grave. However, for many of us, it only increases the respect we had for the award-winning funny lady.
