More Than Two Decades Later, JonBenet's Killer Revealed

It was early in the morning of December 26, 1996, when a 911 call came into the Boulder, Colorado police dispatch. A little girl was missing, and her parents found a ransom note. Hours later, the child was found dead in her own home. For more than 20 years now, the unsolved mystery continues to grab attention, even though authorities aren't any closer to solving it.

After 20 years, the JonBenét Ramsey case has more questions than answers. The child beauty queen was found hidden in the basement of her family home with an injury to her skull and had been strangled by a garrote. Several theories abound, and while every theory seems to have some merit, each one also seems to be filled with holes.

One prime suspect as of late is Burke Ramsey, JonBenét's brother. He was just nine years old at the time, and some odd behavior has been revealed. Apparently, Burke used to smear feces in his sister's room. In interviews after the death of his sister, some of the young boy's behavior raised alarms. It's quite possible to believe that a disturbed child in a fit of rage could have fatally injured his sister.

What's implausible is the idea that the child staged an elaborate kidnapping hoax, including a three-page ransom letter claiming to be from a 'small foreign faction'.

Some argue that the parents could have staged the kidnapping to cover up for Burke, but it seems far-fetched that the parents would find the unresponsive body of their daughter and not call an ambulance.

The parents are also high on many people's list of suspects. Patty Ramsey, now deceased, is a former beauty queen-turned-pageant mom. Many believe the pushy stage mother killed her daughter in a fit of rage after a bedwetting incident. She then staged the kidnapping to throw off investigators.

If that's the case, though, it's hard to understand why she'd ruin her own kidnapping staging by calling police before disposing of the body. Also, by all previous accounts, Patty was a loving and doting mother whose world revolved around her daughter.

Some suspect dad John Ramsey of sexually abusing his daughter and killing her in a struggle. But John has daughters from a prior marriage, and those adult daughters find it impossible to think their father, who never touched them, suddenly turned into a pedophile.

Intruder theories haven't been entirely ruled out yet, either. Some speculate that someone showed up for the Ramseys' open house Christmas tour a few days earlier and hid out in the basement. Another theory is that the intruder came in through a possibly unlocked back door, or through a broken basement window.

The problem with the intruder theory, however, is this: why would a kidnapper looking for a $118,000 ransom stop in the middle of the crime to molest the child? And why would, after killing her, leave the body behind?

A number of books, documentaries and webpages by armchair sleuths have been created in order to attempt to solve the crime, but in all these years it doesn’t look like anyone is getting any closer.
