Mom Who Starved Special Needs Boy, Locked Him Away Learns Her Fate

A shocking case of child abuse has left one mother awaiting her comeuppance.

A 12-year-old boy in Utah was discovered to have been locked in his bathroom for two years, The boy was found to be severely malnourished and living in squalor, as the bathroom was covered in feces and littered with food. As the Daily Mail shares, the boy was in the care of his mother at the time, and she has now learned her fate for caring for her own child in such a fashion.

The boy’s father, Russell Orin Jaynes, discovered what was going on, but he delayed bringing the boy to the hospital for treatment. He was initially facing charges as well, as the boy only tipped the scales at 30 pounds and was in obvious need of attention. The boy’s mother, 36-year-old Brandy K. Jayne was subsequently arrested, and she’s been locked up ever since.

Her defense attorney, Edward Flint, alleges that she had a 'total mental breakdown' that left her feeling overwhelmed and unable to care for her special needs child. The boy and two other children living in the home were taken into foster care after the stunning discovery. The boy at the center of the abuse is recovering from the malnourishment, but he has trouble moving around as normal after being confined to such a small space for such a long time.

The mother plead guilty to three counts of abuse, and she has now learned her fate. The judge in the case has sentenced her to 15 years behind bars, the maximum allowable penalty for the charges she faced.

“Anything less in this case would not be in the interests of justice,” the judge said.

Lt. David Crouse with Washington County Sheriff's Office offered up the disturbing details on the child’s living conditions after the mother was arrested.

“It would be my definition of a torture room. All the light switches were taped into the off position. A baby monitor was setup so voices could come in but not out,” he said. “So they could give instructions to the child that was in the room. There was fecal matter and urine on the floor, there was open cans of food, like can of beans with a spoon in it; there was also a video camera that was capable of wifi monitoring.”

It’s unfathomable to imagine how any parent could hold their own child confined for so long, let alone the condition this defenseless special needs boy was found to be living in. Alleged mental issues of the mother aside, it’s simply stunning that this wasn’t uncovered sooner. While it’s great that the boy’s father was able to get him out of there when he did, where was he for the last two years?

Speculating and judging from afar is always a dangerous game to play, but it’s impossible not to in a disturbing case of abuse such as this one. We can only hope that the boy - and the other children that were living in the home - are now getting the care that they need and deserve.
