Mom Tries to Name Baby 'Cyanide'. Judge Says No, Calls It Dangerous

When you're expecting a new baby, one of the most exciting decisions you have to make is what to name the child. After all, that name is going to be a huge part of your child's identity, and your little one will be carrying it for life. If you're having twins, you have double-duty: you must pick two special names to suit your little ones. One mom thought she had the perfect names for her twins, but a judge ruled them unsuitable.

A woman whose name is being withheld attempted to name her twins Cyanide and Preacher. Local officials immediately objected, and the case went to court. A judge ruled that the names are not okay; the mom isn't allowed to use them.

The mother was furious. She told the judge she thought Cyanide was a 'lovely, pretty name' for a girl. It reminded her of plants and flowers, and she felt it had positive associations because Adolph Hitler committed suicide by taking Cyanide.

Likewise, she felt Preacher was just the right name for a little boy.

The judge put his foot down; the names were unacceptable. The mother fought the ruling, but three judges on the Court of Appeal upheld the initial decision. The mom is out of luck.

Justice Eleanor King believes that it's rare for judges to intervene on such issues, but warranted in this case. The initial judge ruled that such unusual names could be harmful to the twins.

"It is hard to see how ... the twin girl could regard being named after this deadly poison as other than a complete rejection of her by her birth mother," said King.

The children aren't even remaining in the mother's care; they're placed in foster homes. The mother has a history of mental health issues and drug abuse.

Imagine if judges in the U.S. told celebrities that they couldn't name their kids unusual names, like Apple and Pilot Inspektor. There would be an uproar.
