Mom Shows Up To School With 1-Yr-Old, Teachers Horrified When They Realize What She Did To Him

While a mother bringing her child to school is far from out of the ordinary, it quickly became so when teachers saw the state one boy was in.

Police are investigating the death of a one-year-old boy in Missouri after his mother left him in a hot vehicle. The mother rushed the child to a local school for help and the boy was brought to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead. Investigators believe the child could have been left in the car in 80-degree weather for an 'extended period of time'.

The mother of Tate Mitchell got into her van and was headed to Casa Dia Montessori school, where the little boy attended day care, in St. Louis near 5 p.m. on Monday. When she pulled up, she soon discovered that she had forgotten to drop Tate off that morning and he was still in her van.

Temperatures had climbed into the 80's on Monday in St. Louis, meaning the temperatures inside the enclosed van would have exceeded 100 degrees. The mother dragged Tate's unresponsive body out of the van and rushed into the school. Staff performed CPR and tried to revive the child while someone called 911.

“The comments of the call were that a baby was left in a vehicle since the morning and was not breathing,” said Sgt. Shawn McGuire of the St. Louis County police.

Emergency responders arrived and rushed the child to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead. An autopsy was performed on Tuesday to determine the cause of death, and police are investigating the incident.

The mother, whose name has not been released, has other children according to reports, but Tate was the only one who attended the day care.

It's unclear why the mother forgot to drop Tate off at the school on Monday morning. Rick Deeba, president of Casa Dia Montessori-Kinswood, says that the school is not in the habit of calling parents if children don't show up in the morning. "Calling the parents when children don't arrive is not our policy due to too many fluctuating schedules," he explained.

“All of our hearts are so saddened by this tragedy,” Deeba said in a statement on Tuesday. “And we grieve with this family at the terrible accidental loss of this child. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

The growing epidemic of parents forgetting kids is of increasing concern to authorities. Nearly 40 children every year died after being forgotten in a car. Often these mistakes occur when there is a change in routine, and parents running on ‘autopilot’ in the morning forget they’re carrying a sleeping little one.

Some schools and day cares utilize safety precautions, such as calling parents when children fail to show up at the appointed time. Some parent have begun to take precautions, such as putting a purse or a shoe in the back next to the car seat—something a busy parent on the run is going to notice missing when stepping out of the car. Some companies are working on devices that would alert parents leaving an infant behind.

No word yet on whether any charges will be filed against the mother in this case.
