Mom Of Deceased Armed Robber Laments Fact Her Son Was Shot So Many Times

Cynthia Ruiz is living through a parent’s worst nightmare. Her son, 19-year-old Andrew Herrera, went down the wrong path, and he’s now dead as the result of his actions.

The single mother and widow is still trying to comprehend what led her son to attempt an armed robbery, and she also has some questions as to why he was shot so many times during the botched attempt. As The Blaze shares, Herrera was shot five times while attempting to rob a Popeyes Chicken restaurant in San Antonio.

Herrera entered the restaurant wearing a hoodie and a mask while brandishing a gun. He confronted a man and his family that were eating dinner and demanded money.

The man explained that he has spent all of his money on food, and that led Herrera to turn his attention to one of the workers that was scurrying away from the counter. From that point, the male diner brandished his own gun and opened fire.

Herrera was shot five times, and he would ultimately succumb to his injuries.

A police spokesman noted that the male diner had a concealed carry permit, and he wasn’t facing any charges as a result of his actions.

“Here in Texas, if you’re in fear of loss of life, loss of property, you have a right to defend yourself,” the spokesman said.

Police Capt. Michael Starnes provided some more clarity on the tragic scene.

“The citizen is a licensed carrier and did use his handgun to take down the robber,” Starnes said. “He really saved the day and protected a lot of people today.”

That’s of little solace to Ruiz, who is now mourning the loss of her son. While she understands he was in the wrong, she also notes that he had suffered from bipolar disorder as a child and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2016.

“Did my son deserve to be punished? Yes, he did,” she said.

She wants to get a good look at the surveillance video of the incident, as she’s having a hard time understanding why her son had to be shot so many times.

“Why shoot him four more times? Why did he shoot him five times?” she added.

Ruiz also notes that a second suspect in the incident informed her that the “gun wasn’t even loaded.”

This is an incredibly sad situation, and it’s next to impossible not to have your heart go out to Ruiz on the loss of her son. That said, whether or not his gun was loaded is irrelevant.

He went into a restaurant and threatened violence so that he could get some money. We can only imagine that everyone in the establishment was scared out of their minds.

The male diner was obviously protecting his family, and we’re going to assume that’s part of what led him to seek out a concealed carry permit in the first place.

The police have indicated that there are no charges pending against the shooter, so we can take that as further confirmation that there’s nothing amiss here. This is an incredibly unfortunate situation, and our sincere thoughts and prayers go out to the mother that lost her son in heartbreaking fashion.
