Mom Realizes What’s Wrong When Baby Seems ‘Drunk’ Following A Routine Doctor’s Visit

An Australian mom is horrified that her 6-week-old baby almost died, and she's warning parents to be careful. The woman did what many parents do: she took a prescription for medication from her pediatrician and gave it to her baby without questioning it. The doctor accidentally prescribed a dangerous amount.

Jessica Brough, 23, took her 6-week-old daughter Grace for her regular medical check-up. The doctor wrote a prescription for a reflux medication, which Brough brought to the pharmacist.

The pharmacist wanted to know why the infant was being given injections that contained alcohol. He noticed the extreme dosage as well, and Brough went back to the doctor's office to get an amended prescription. This one was filled, but the doctor still gave Grace way too big a dose for her size. The suggested dose for a baby her weight would have been .07 ml. Grace was given 10 ml, more than 10 times the recommended amount.

Brough went home and gave her baby the medication for three days. She felt something was wrong. “For three days, my baby has been, for all intents and purposes, drunk,” she told Yahoo7 News.

A house nurse came for a routine visit to check Grace's weight. When Brough asked about the medication and showed it to her, the nurse said, "That's not right."

The nurse called to check the dosage with the hospital and a pediatrician told them to bring Grace in ‘immediately.'

“Given the three-month dosage, it would have fried her brain, caused liver damage, heart attack or she could have died, that’s what the doctor told us," said Brough.

Grace is now recovering, but doctors won't know the extent of the damage for years. They'll have to watch carefully to see that she reaches her developmental milestones in a timely manner.

“You put your trust in them... especially with a six-week-old baby, you don’t think ‘I better Google that they’ve prescribed the right dosage’.” said the mom.
