Mom Left Her Son In Car For Over An Hour While She Shoplifted In Grocery Store; Searching Her, Police Find Meth

One mom was arrested on Saturday after making a series of very bad choices. The Florida woman left her infant son alone in a car for over an hour while she went into a local Publix.

By the time she came out, authorities had rescued her crying son from the vehicle. Police found the mom was in possession of drugs and stolen goods.

The baby was spotted by a couple who were coming out of the grocery store. The couple had heard crying coming from the SUV when they parked and went into the Publix, but they assumed a parent was around taking care of the child.

When they left 45 minutes later, the baby was still crying. They decided to investigate.

They found the baby was alone inside an SUV and called authorities. Fire rescue workers rushed over and tended to the child. It was a cold day, but thankfully the 4-month-old boy was unharmed.

Police arrived and ran the license plates to get the name of the owner of the vehicle. They then had Publix call the woman on the intercom system, and when she came up front the employees directed her to the parking lot.

The mother, identified as 30-year-old Sarah Jean Wilmot, came out of the store and ran over to her child. “Oh, my God! That’s my son!” she reportedly screamed when she saw her child in the arms of paramedics.

The mom initially attempted to convince police that she hadn’t done anything wrong. She claimed she had been with a cousin and that the cousin was left in the car with the baby.

She says it was her cousin who must have wandered off, leaving the child alone. But with just a little bit of questioning, that story quickly fell apart and police suspected it was fabricated.

Wilmot finally confessed to police that she lied about leaving the baby with a cousin and that she had actually left him in the car alone while she went in the store for a short shopping trip. She claims he was sleeping and she didn’t want to disturb him.

A glimpse at store security cameras found that Wilmoth had left her son in the car for over an hour. She was placed under arrest and subsequently searched.

During the search, police discovered that the mother had shoplifted cosmetics and hygiene products from the public, such as nail polish, facial cream, and 'Poo-Pourrie' bathroom deodorant.

In all, she had stolen about $35 worth of merchandise.

They also found the mother in possession of a crack pipe and a clear, plastic baggie of methamphetamine-laced with cocaine. It’s unclear if the mother had used the drugs before she left her baby alone in a parking lot on a cold winter day and headed into a store to stuff merchandise into her bra, however being on drugs might explain some of the poor decisions that she made that day.

The mother was charged with child endangerment, meth possession and shoplifting. She was held over the weekend on $6,500 bail, but she posted bond on Monday and was released.
