Mom With Homeless Son Begs People Not To Give Him Anything

As winter's icy grip clutched down on cities across the globe, many homeless people begin to struggle to survive the dark, cold months. As Christmas approached and many generous shoppers filling the streets with fat wallets feel compelled to bestow a little charity and goodwill.

People are more likely to give money to the homeless during the holidays, thinking that they are helping someone down on his or her luck. According to the mother of one homeless man, by offering food, clothing, and money to the homeless, you're only helping to kill them.

An anonymous woman wrote an open letter begging people not to hand money, food or clothing to the homeless this winter. It's not that she's heartless; her own son, who she wants to help desperately, is homeless.

She explains in her letter that when people give her son anything they are just enabling him to stay on the streets longer.

According to Metro U.K., the woman's 22-year-old son is a drug addict in denial. He talks to her about 'crack heads' looking like 'zombies', but refuses to admit that he is one of them.

The man has been refusing all help for years. The only time he's come close to seeking help is when he hits rock-bottom, but then some kind, generous soul comes along and gives him what he needs to sustain himself for the short-term. Out of immediate danger, he goes back to using and remains on the streets.

The mother says family life wasn't perfect but he has a large, loving family that he barely sees anymore. She's been trying to get her son help since his teen years, when he started using drugs.

She's done all she could, but unless he wants to get help, there's nothing she can really do for him. "I have been in regular contact with his youth offending workers, probation workers, drug workers, teachers…. collected him when he got released from prison," she says.

"I have offered advice, I have offered to pay for rehab (god knows how thou). I have offered to help to pay for 6 months’ rent if he gets clean BUT he refuses all of this," she continues. “I have asked him to talk to me about where I went wrong, how I could have done things differently, I have apologized for my failings to him as a mother. I have begged him to stop drugs, I have sent him pictures to remind him of the life he used to have."

The drug support agencies have advised the mom not to make him comfortable. She understands why, now, and is urging everyone else to consider the reasoning.

"Addicts need their fixes by the hour and day. They can not think long term,” she explains.

"So when you give my son clothes you are keeping him warm for that day and the next. When you give my son food you are feeding him for that day and the next. When you give my son money you are feeding his drug habit for that day and the next. But none of this will help him in the long term as none of these are a long-term fix. You are in effect helping my son to meet his short term needs with quick fixes," she explains.

The woman urges people to give to charities meant to help the homeless off the street rather than giving directly to people in need.
