Mom Decides To Leave Placenta Attached To Baby For A Week - Here's Why

Our world continues to advance in previously incomprehensible ways at the speed of light, and there’s just no slowing that down. That’s true whether we’re talking about broad topics such as business and education, and even simple things such as how we communicate or do our jobs. Regardless of the advancement being discussed, there’s always a school of thought that suggests the old school way of doing things is just fine.

There are even some pending parents that apply that line of thinking to the childbirth process. As they see it, those that used to give birth to their children without the assistance of others were on to something.

Of course, those that see things differently will look at these folks as if they have an extra head or two. As that group sees it, it’s downright irresponsible of these parents to even attempt such things and potentially put their newborn in harm’s way.

Despite that little debate, there’s plenty of folks that stick to their guns and subscribe to such things as unassisted birth. While we can’t get in the mind of each and every person that makes such decisions, we can only assume that they have weighed the risks and are comfortable with their choice. It may seem very out there to some observers, but it makes perfect sense in the minds of those that go that route.

As Little Things shares, another interesting example of that popped up on a recent episode of ‘The Doctors.’ For those that think unassisted birth is definitely out there, there’s a good chance they’ll feel even stronger about that conviction after digesting this little tale. A new mom named Adele joined the program, and she was discussing how she had decided to go through with lotus births for her two children.

In short, the practice dictates that the umbilical cord is to be left attached to the baby - as well as the placenta - until it naturally separates. In Adele’s case, her babies remained attached to the placenta for nearly an entire week.

If you’re thinking that sounds rather unpleasant, you’re not alone. Adele was able to get around the natural smells associated with such a practice by concocting a mixture of rock salt, essential oils and flower petals.

As she sees it, it’s no different than curing meat that one wouldn’t want to spoil. Alright. So what is the alleged benefit to the lotus birth method?

Proponents note that the newborn will continue to receive the maximum amount of blood in the cord, and that’s chock full of essential nutrients. Most importantly, Adele would note that the babies were born without any complications.

Needless to say, the appearance raised a ton of eyebrows and led to plenty of chatter about the sanity of this method. It’ll be interesting to see if her tale helps to inspire even more interest in the lotus birth method, or if it has the exact opposite effect.
