Mississippi Lawmakers Double Down On The Bible As The Official State Book

In 2015, Democratic Mississippi state Reps. Tom Miles and Michael Evans proposed making the Bible the official state book. Evans told AL.com, "Me and my constituents, we were talking about it and one of them made a comment that people ought to start reading the Bible."

Evans shares that his constituents were talking about "all the things going wrong in the world" when a suggestion surfaced of making the Bible the official book of Mississippi. Evans stated, "I believe in the Bible," but "the bill doesn't force anyone to read it."

The bill did not make it out of a committee in 2015. Although, Miles and Evans have recently proposed House Bill 840, which says the "Holy Bible is hereby designated as the official state book of Mississippi."
