Mirai Nagasu Made History At Pyeongchang, But People Were Wondering About Her Leg 'Tattoo'

Mirai Nagasu is bringing home a bronze medal from the 2018 Olympics, and she also made her country proud by being the first female skater to land a triple axel at the Olympics. Her performance was outstanding, but the buzz seemed to be more about the lettering on her thigh than her beautiful performance on the ice.

People can stop wondering, now; the mystery was solved.

Mirai Nagasu caught attention not by the legendary triple axel jump, which she nailed perfectly, but for the bold 'USA' letters that appeared to be tattooed on her inner right thigh.

People began wondering about the mark, but an explanation has been offered. It wasn't a tattoo, it was a bandage.

KT Tape company has claimed the mark for their own. The company makes an elastic sports tape, known as Kinesio tape, which helps to support muscles, tendons and ligaments while relieving pain.

The company tweeted a shout out to claim the mark on the Olympic medal winner's leg.

“Everyone is wondering, but that’s no tattoo on @mirai_nagasu’s leg, that’s #KTTape PRO USA tape! We’re proud to provide pain relief and support to #TeamUSA.”

Some thought that the advertising was a little tacky. "Not a good look. Could have achieved the same result without the tasteless marketing ploy," wrote one person.

Others really loved the tape.

"That is a f--king good looking logo in a glorious performance," said one person on Twitter.

"My whole body is basically held together with @KTTape its a figure skater must-have," said another.

Nagasu was a little startled by the attention that her leg was being given on Twitter, but confirmed it was not ink.  “This is the first I’m hearing of this but definitely not a big bold tattoo," she said.

The jump that made history is a much more interesting topic, however, for figure skating fans. Tonya Harding was the first woman to land a triple axel in competition at the World Championship games in 1991, and Kimmie Meissner landed the jump in 2005.

Nagasu is the first female to make the jump in the olympics, and the 24-year-old took off like she had wings. She stuck the landing, and made the difficult move look effortless.

“I knew in my heart that this day would come,” Mirai said to CNN.  “This is definitely history, or herstory, whatever way you want to put it.”

Nagasu finished fourth in Vancouver in 2010 but was snubbed for the 2014 Olympics. The skater said this only gave her the drive to make it to Pyeongchang in 2018, and it's why she pushed herself to attempt the holy grail of jumps.

Coach Tom Zakrajsek says she knew the triple axel would put her performance over the top, and insisted that it become part of her program from day one.

“The day she asked me to coach her, I said, ‘I’ll do it provided you’re going to be greater and better than you’ve ever been,’” Zakrajsek said to the San Diego Union-Tribune. “It wasn’t immediate, but I could tell from the first lesson I worked with her that she was special, that there was a lot to work with.

“It was almost like an iceberg. The skating world had only seen the top but there was so much more underneath.”

"I have always believed that I've been an amazing skater regardless of what the results say," Nagasu said in a press conference. "I think that determination and confidence has kept me in the game this long. I'm aware I'm the oldest here tonight, but I really feel like the comeback kid."
