Men Who Attempted To Kill A Police Officer Get An Unexpected Surprise In Court

Two suspected gang members from New Jersey have been arrested after a shooting that killed one suspect and left an Atlantic City police officer in critical condition.

Martell Chisholm of Millville, NJ and 28-year-old Demetrius Cross of Bridgeton, NJ are facing two counts each of attempted murder in the first degree, three counts of robbery in the first degree and other offenses.

The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Jerome Damon of Camden.

The trouble began at about 2:30 a.m. outside the Caesars Atlantic City parking garage on Arkansas Avenue.

Two AC police officers saw a robbery in progress involving six males.

When one officer exited the vehicle, he was shot and critically injured.

A second officer returned fire and struck Damon. The other male suspects fled the scene.
Damon collapsed and died a couple of blocks away.

The injured officer was transported to a local hospital, and is currently in critical condition.

Mayor Don Guardian noted that hundreds of officers responded to the shooting, and commented:

“I'm also very grateful for all of the police officers we have scouring the city. And we are doing everything we can to provide safety for our residents and visitors.”

All five of those involved have been located and identified. It turned out that three of the men were victims of an armed robbery by Damon, Chisholm and Cross, and were eventually released. Chisholm and Cross were arrested.

Of note, Damon had served time in prison for aggravated assault.
