As a number of designers vowed to never lay a tape measure on soon-to-be First Lady Melania Trump, a famous pair in Italy had only nice things to say when the former fashion model wore their clothes. A friendly remark and photo stirred up a firestorm around them. Hopefully they have some flame-proof fabric on hand.
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the famous duo who make up the hot Italian design team Dolce & Gabbana, have enraged their largely liberal and progressive base by complimenting Melania Trump for wearing their dress. The compliment has been seen as a direct endorsement of her husband for president.
Melania Trump wore a dress by the duo on New Year's Eve that was purchased at Saks Fifth Avenue. Gabbana shared a photo of Mrs. Trump on Instagram, and said, "Melania Trump… Thank You." He added five hearts.
Social media lit up with criticism against the duo for showing love to a Trump. Someone commented, “Sad when a gay designer doesn’t care about other groups being repressed.”
The criticism was apparently the last straw for Gabbana, who shot back with the comment, "Dont call me gay please!! I’m a man!!! Who I love its my private life [sic].”
The 54-year-old designer has always been openly gay, but his dismissal of the word 'gay' and kind word to Mrs. Trump was the LGBTQ equivalent of declaring war. How it will end is still unclear; but those interested might want to grab the popcorn and keep an eye on social media.
