Megan Rapinoe In Hot Water For Ignoring Warnings About Sitting Out The National Anthem

After the U.S. Soccer Federation allowed plays back on the field during the national anthem, one player protesting the anthem proved that nothing had changed. Once again, the player took a knee alongside her teammates.

Megan Rapinoe first followed in the footsteps (or, perhaps more appropriately, knee prints) of NFL player Colin Kaepernick earlier this month. She knelt for the national anthem, refusing to stand or salute the flag during the 'Star Spangled Banner.'

Later that same week, when U.S. Soccer tried to circumvent the problem by playing the anthem before the players took the field, Rapinoe was furious. She voiced her outrage that her teammates were denied the opportunity to salute the flag, while she was denied the opportunity to protest it. A U.S. Soccer spokesperson said they didn't want to 'subject our fans and friends to the disrespect we feel such an act would represent'

U.S. Soccer said that Rapinoe would not be punished for her initial protest during the game, but made clear that they would re-evaluate that decision if she protested again.

Rapinoe is testing the federation-- during Sunday's game, she once again knelt down and refused to take part in the national anthem.

U.S. Soccer said in a statement that the federation has an 'expectation that our players and coaches will stand and honor our flag while the national anthem is played,' though they've made no specific comments yet about Rapinoe.

Rapinoe says she hasn't yet figured out her plans about how far she'll take the protest. "I don't know what that looks like," she said. "Do I kneel forever? I don't know, probably not. But I think until I can feel like I'm being more effective in other ways, then this seems appropriate to me."
