McEnroe Claims That Trump Tried To Initiate A Tennis-Style "Battle Of The Sexes"

John McEnroe is considered one of the greatest tennis players who ever lived. So is Serena Williams, however. McEnroe disrespected that when he made derogatory comments about why he would never play Williams. Williams shot back at him, but many were eager to see a grudge match. Even President Donald Trump had approached McEnroe at one time and offered to pay him to play Williams.

McEnroe once praised Serena Williams. The three-time Wimbledon-winner said himself that Williams may be the greatest woman player in the history of the game. "Three years ago, I thought she was the best to ever play, but it sort of cements it in historical terms," McEnroe said in an interview with ESPN in 2015.

"To me, she could arguably be the greatest athlete of the last 100 years," he added.

McEnroe should have stuck to that, because he got a lot of heat for more recent comments in which he said he would never play against Williams. Because she's a woman, he apparently doesn't believe she'd be a worthy competitor.

McEnroe was asked if he would play her, but he said Williams only ranks number one when she plays against women. He said if she was compared to male tennis players, she'd rank "like 700".

Many began calling for an exhibition match to settle the matter. A 'Battle of the Sexes' hadn't stirred this much interest since Billie Jean King faced off against Bobby Riggs in 1973. The game was supposed to go to the best of five sets, but ended early when King destroyed Riggs in the first three sets. King put women's tennis on the map with that match.

When called on it, McEnroe refused to put his money where his mouth was. "I never really thought that was something, to mix the apples and oranges," McEnroe said. "I should probably suggest now that it might not be a bad idea if everybody is up in arms about it."

McEnroe admits that people have been pushing him for years to play Williams - including the POTUS, before he was POTUS. Trump once offered McEnroe money to agree to the match.

"Over the course of time, people, including our now-President — [he] wasn't President at the time — have offered me sums of money to play either Serena or Venus," McEnroe said. "I don't know why I am always the guy that they want to play, the old fart now...Why don't they ask her to play Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal on clay, and see how that goes?"

It's funny McEnroe should be open to it now, with Williams pregnant and all. Williams shot back at McEnroe for his comments on Twitter.

"Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based," the Olympic gold medal winner wrote. "I've never played anyone ranked 'there' nor do I have time. Respect me and my privacy as I'm trying to have a baby. Good day sir."
