McDonald's New Policy Has Americans Outraged

McDonald's has long been considered a prime example of 'the American Dream' come true. The restaurant was first opened in 1940 by the McDonald's brothers, took off as a franchise and now has more than 36,000 outlets. Recently, it’s come to light that McDonald’s is outsourcing the American dream to foreigners.

An Ohio McDonald’s office quietly fired 70 employees in favor of outsourcing to H-1B workers. H-1B is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers. The maneuver was discovered when McDonald's filed a Petition for Trade Adjustment Assistance, which would compensate the 70 out-of-work people they’d just fired with taxpayer money.

This time it was not IT techs who were replaced; it was accountants. H-B1 outsourcing was originally a trend that mainly plagued the computer and technology industry, but now hundreds of thousands of prestigious jobs have been granted to foreigners on H-B1 visas in the fields of healthcare, accounting, education, design and engineering.

According to a McDonald's spokesperson, cutting costs was the bottom line. “To deliver $500 million in savings, the vast majority by the end of 2017, we are restructuring many aspects of our business, including an accounting function,” said Terri Hickey.

Outsourcing contractor Genpact, a company that was initially part of General Electric but has since become independent, arranges the employment contracts between American companies and Indians who are able to obtain H-1B visas. The company, partially owned by Bain Capital, has outsourcing contracts in major cities across the country.

Key Democratic leaders, including presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, have lent their support to outsourcing companies and vow to expand them. The trend is expected to grow.
