Mayor Approached Panhandler With A Sign Asking For Work - Gives Him An Offer He Can't Refuse

Albuquerque, New Mexico Mayor Richard Berry has come up with a way to combat poverty after seeing a man with a sign that read, “Want a Job. Anything Helps.”

According to Independent Journal Review, the mayor decided he would take the man up on his offer and created a program to help people earn money instead of begging for it. Instead of creating panhandling as a crime he started a program called, “There’s a Better Way.”

“Many cities, including Albuquerque, in the past have been punitive and give tickets out and that just hasn't worked,” said Berry. “So we've decided to take upon ourselves a new and unique initiative called, 'There's a Better Way.'”

The city pays individuals $9, which is higher than New Mexico’s minimum wage, to do different jobs around the city. So far the new workers have beautified the area and hauled away more than 69,000 pounds of weeds and litter.

“[The mayor's] Chief of Staff found an old van from the city’s motor pool, wrapped it in the 'There’s A Better Way' decal and established a partnership with a local service provider to manage and operate the pick-ups of panhandlers interested in jobs,” the mayor’s aide told Independent Journal Review.
