Marine Elated to Finally Be Set Free From 'Inhumane' Iranian Prison

Amir Hekmati, 32, a former Marine from Michigan, was finally released from an Iranian prison earlier this week. He had been jailed since August 2011 dealing with torture and solitary confinement.

His sister says he was tased, drugged with lithium and lied to that his mother had died. The Iranian government accused him of being a spy when he went to Iran to visit his dying grandmother.

Hekmati said he remained strong because "I didn't want to let my fellow Marines down and the reputation of the Marine Corps." After interrogators drugged him, they forced him to experience withdrawal. If that wasn't enough, his feet were beaten with cables and his kidneys were tased.

He was one of the four prisoners released by Iran earlier this week and reunited with his family in Germany.

Hekmati also said, "I tried my best to keep my head up and withstand all the pressures that were put upon me, some of which were very inhumane and unjust."

On Tuesday, Hekmati said he was nervous to board the plane to leave Iran by stating "I was worried that maybe the Iranian side was going to make new demands at the last minute or that the deal wasn't going to work out, so up until the last second we were all worried and concerned." He added, "As soon as we got out of Iranian air space, champagne bottles were popped."
