Man's Kidnapping Prank On His Girlfriend Lands Him In Jail

A man from England had been drinking with his buddies, and somehow they all thought it would be hilarious if they played a prank on the man's pregnant girlfriend. He called her pretending to be kidnapped, and sounded a little too convincing.

The woman called the police, and authorities launched efforts to rescue the man. The prank landed the guy in jail.

Leigh Ford from Blackpool, England called his girlfriend, Zoe Doyle, to tell her that he had been kidnapped. The 45-year-old man spoke in a frantic tone on the phone, telling Doyle that he would be tortured unless she gave the kidnappers ransom money. He said they demanded about $100, which is about how much the woman had in the bank.

“At first, I just thought he was winding me up," said Doyle, who is 35 weeks pregnant with Ford's baby, to Oddity Central. “But he sounded really scared. The phone went dead and then it rang again. I could hear men shouting in the background, threatening to break Leigh’s legs and throw boiling water over him. They were threatening to mutilate him, cut off his genitals, and I was panic-stricken.”

The 35-year-old mother to be started to panic. She quickly arranged to transfer the money, but she also called the police for help.

As it turns out, Ford was in no danger at all. He was with his friends, who he says talked him into pulling the prank on his girlfriend so they could all go out drinking together. Ford spent the night out having a blast, only to come home the next morning to find all hell had broken lose.

Ford walked into his home as if nothing had happened, but was shocked to find police waiting for him. Police questioned the father to be, and at first he lied about what really happened.

Unfortunately for Ford, police were able to obtain security video that featured him and his friends leaving a store with their arms full of alcoholic beverages. He finally admitted he made up the story of the kidnapping to play a joke on Doyle, and to get money to stay out drinking.

Ford was promptly arrested. The next day, he appeared for a court hearing. Doyle heard the real story for the first time.

“He appeared in court the following day and I was stunned when I heard the truth. I just couldn’t believe that Leigh would do that. He had wasted all those police resources. He had put me through hell,” explains. “The silly thing was, it was his own money. He could have spent it if he had wanted. It just didn’t make sense.”

Ford was very apologetic, claiming that he had been drinking and didn't exert the best judgement. His friends came up with the idea of playing the prank and encouraged him to go through with hit, and he said he wasn't thinking straight.

Doyle forgave Ford because she believes he is a good guy and really loves her. She was furious with him, however, and said she could have strangled him.

Sadly, the stunt landed Ford in jail for 16 weeks. The police department had spent nearly $40,000 on resources to find and rescue the fake kidnap victim. The judge did not find it an amusing prank at all.

Because of his prison sentence, Ford is going to miss the birth of his baby. It was a costly joke for all involved.
