While it’s never a good idea to judge without having the whole story, we all have those moments when we see something incredibly off-putting that causes us to rush to judgement on a person’s character. That can often happen when we see a case of a child being mistreated. We’re not talking about your average discipline situation, as all children will meltdown from time to time. As long as there’s nothing abusive about the way the parent or caregiver handles it, we have to assume they know best in that situation.
We are talking about situations in which a child is clearly put in danger due to the carelessness of those entrusted with caring for them. It’s pretty common to have thoughts along the lines of ‘that person has no business being around children, let alone having one,’ pop into your head at that point in time. In extreme cases, you may even find yourself consumed with an overwhelming sense of responsibility to contact the authorities.
As the BBC shares, a slew of users on social media felt the need to do just that after this man’s sick stunt. The unidentified man dangled a baby out of the window of a high-rise building in Algeria. That’s disturbing enough in and of itself, but he would make an absolutely mind-boggling decision from that point. A picture was snapped of the scary scene, and the deranged man shared the photo with an incredibly disturbing caption.
"1,000 likes or I will drop him," the caption read.
Users on social media were absolutely horrified over this man’s sick attention grab, and a groundswell of anger exploded into outright calls for the man to be arrested for child abuse. The man was eventually tracked down and arrested, but he claimed that the photo was altered by other users. Additionally, he attempted to paint a picture that the child was never in any real danger.
"The picture was taken in a balcony with protective barriers. These were removed," he said.
Authorities weren’t buying it, and the man has been sentenced to two years in prison. He’s a relative of the child in the photo, and the baby’s father stunningly asked the court to forgive the man. The father alleges that it was just a game.
Really? A game that could potentially lead to the death of your own child is somehow acceptable? While no charges have been filed against the father, it certainly sounds like someone needs to have a chat with him to determine if the child is in further danger that has yet to come to light.
This is beyond disturbing, and one of the more outrageous aspects is why this stunt was conducted in the first place. For likes. Somewhere in the twisted man’s head is a gigantic need for affirmation that everything is going along swimmingly in his life. Obviously, it’s not, and perhaps he can spend the next two years thinking through why he has such an obsessive need for likes.
