Man Went to Doctor For Nose Bleeds, Could Not Believe What Doctor Pulled Out

A man from China began having a lot of nosebleeds. For ten days straight, his nose just kept bleeding on and off, and he started to worry that it was something serious. He went to the doctor, and was stunned by the living creature that the doctor pulled out of his nostril.

The man, known only as Mr. Pan, said he hadn’t been experiencing any pain, but he was becoming worried because his nose started to bleed on a daily basis. At first he just thought it might be something minor, so he ignored it, but after a while he decided that he should get it checked out.

He went to see an ear, nose and throat specialist at Dongguan Chang’an Hospital in China’s Guangdong province.

As soon as he told his doctor, Liu Yuxing, about his symptoms, Dr. Liu suspected that the problem was something horrifying: leeches.

Dr. Liu had never come across a case in which a leech was in a patient's nose, but he had read medical journals that detailed other cases. Using endoscopy, he took a peek up Pan's nose, and sure enough, he was right. A leech was in there and firmly affixed to the inside of the man's nostril.

“Though I’d never come across one myself in my many years as a doctor, I immediately suspected it was a leech based on similar reports seen in medical journals,” Liu told ET Today.

Liu tried to figure out how the leech could have gotten up the man's nostril. He asked Pan if he had been using any water sources that may have been infected with leech larvae. Pan recalled swimming in a river near his village some three months ago, but that's all.

Dr. Liu believes that the leech larvae went into Pans nose and stayed there all this time. After it hatched, it attached and continued to grow.

Pan asked the doctor why the leech hadn't caused him any pain, and as it turns out, leeches have anesthetic saliva. They also have an anticoagulant chemical in their saliva, so it prevents the blood from clotting and the wound from healing. This is why Pan kept getting nosebleeds.

Pan needed some mild anesthesia so that the doctors could remove the leech without causing him any pain. He filmed the procedure in which he pulled the parasite out of the host's nostril, and showed off the squirming, writhing leech to the camera.

It was about an inch long, and the very thought of the little blood sucker being inside of you is enough to drive anyone mad.

Understandably, Pan averted his eyes away from the wriggling creature as the doctor held it up. He clearly didn’t want to think about it. Thankfully, though, the leech did not cause any major damage and the patient is expected to recover nicely—physically, at least.

It may be a while before he’s healed enough mentally and emotionally so that he can go swimming in a river again.

It could have been worse. In another case, doctors found a spider had built a web and was living inside a man's ear. In another incident, parasitic worms had gotten into a young girl's eyeball.
