Man Wakes Up From Coma After 12 Years, Shocks His Mother By Revealing This

A South African boy fell ill when he was just 12 years old. His condition quickly deteriorated to a vegetative state, and for 12 long years he was in a coma. His family was told that there was no hope.

At around age 14 or 15, Martin Pistorius says something in him woke up. He was able to hear and see and even comprehend everything going on around him, but he wasn't able to respond and let anyone know he was awake in his shell of a body. Everyone around him continued to believe he was unaware.

After a decade, a caregiver noticed response in Pistorius' eyes. It was that realization that led to efforts to bring Pistorius out of his shell, so to speak. With therapy he was eventually able to regain some upper body functions. He now speaks through a computer. Though he's in a wheelchair, he's able to get around. He went to college, learned to drive, and even got married. He’s also written a book about his experiences, entitled, “Ghost Boy.”

"For so many years I was like a ghost. It was like I wasn't there. I was invisible," says Pistorius.

Pistorius explains that when he was young, he saw people say and do things, thinking they were alone in the room. The now 40-year-old freelance web designer says he was abused, or witnessed abuse, in just about every care home he'd ever been in-- verbal, physical and sexual.

One day when he was a teen, Pistorius recalls his mother said to him, "I hope you die."

"While I was very sad and upset by what she said, I understood where that was coming from," Pistorius said. He always heard her questioning herself as a mother, and he wished he could tell her just what a good mother she was. Thankfully, eventually, he was able to do just that.
